Metascan does win from Virustotal in terms of maximum allowed file size to be uploaded. Virustotal Online Antivirus limits it to 32MB and Metascan Online to 40MB. What is Wake on LAN


What is Wake on LAN 

Wake on LAN is the ability to switch on remote computers through special network packets.
This only works with network cards and motherboards that are Wake on LAN compliant.

Wake on LAN is based on the following principle:

When the PC shuts down, the NIC (Network Interface Card) still gets power, and keeps listening on the network for a 'magic' packet to arrive. This packet must contain a certain byte-sequence, but can be encapsulated in any kind of packet (IPX, IP, anything). Take a look at the code for the magic sequence.

This program uses UDP for sending the packet. The complete UDP packet, sent
over an ethernet interface, looks something like this:

[ethernet header][IP header][UDP header][Magic sequence][CRCS]

The only goal of the script is to send this packet over the network.
It expects no returning data, since the NIC only listens, and does
not reply anything.

Requirements for the Wake On LAN

1.An ATX motherboard with 3-pin Wake on LAN connector.

2.An ATX power supply meeting the ATX 2.01 specifications.

3.A network card (NIC) that supports Wake on LAN.

4.Wake on LAN should be enabled in the BIOS power Management.

How to Choose a Router for Your Business


Buying a router for a business isn't as simple as picking a consumer product with the best ratings from an online merchant or the best price on the shelf at a local electronics superstore. Your company has serious needs, such as supporting scores of users (including guests) on the network, and locking down company data to guard against snoops.
Before shopping for networking gear, you need to understand the types of equipment available, as well as their typical uses and features. Read on for an introduction to router equipment, along with an explanation of the features to watch for.

Types of Routers

If you need to support only a dozen computers and Wi-Fi devices at the most, a simple consumer or small-business wireless router should suffice. These routers typically provide enough Wi-Fi coverage for a 1500- to 2000-square-foot, two-story office space. They'll provide four ethernet ports for hard-wiring computers into the network or for adding other components, such as network-capable printers, network storage, or additional wireless access points for more Wi-Fi coverage.
If you need to support more than a dozen computers and devices, or if security is crucial to your operations, you need something more than a simple wireless router. You have two main types to consider.
VPN router/firewall: These products, a step up from a basic wireless router, can be wireless or ethernet-only; the latter type requires that you add access points for Wi-Fi coverage. These routers have an integrated virtual private network server, and sometimes offer advanced features (more on those later) such as VLAN support and multiple SSIDs (if wireless).
UTM (unified threat management) gateway or firewall: These routers include advanced features and usually are ethernet-only with four to eight ports, thus requiring separate access points for Wi-Fi connectivity. In addition to serving as your router and Internet gateway, as well as providing a VPN server and firewall, these units typically also include virus and malware protection, content filtering, antispam functions, and intrusion detection and prevention.
The additional security features usually require monthly or yearly subscription fees. You’ll still want virus and malware protection on each user computer due to the limitations of network-based products, though, since they can’t monitor local behavior on PCs or inspect SSL-encrypted traffic.
As you shop, you'll probably encounter other buzzwords referring to devices that are similar to UTM products, including unified security gateways and Internet security appliances.

Expanding Ethernet Ports or Wi-Fi Coverage

If you require more ethernet ports than what a router, gateway, or firewall provides (regardless of the type), you'll need to purchase an ethernet switch. This device is basically a smart hub that expands the amount of ethernet ports you have, similar in concept to a USB hub or even an electrical power strip. You’ll find a few different types.

An unmanaged switch is the simplest; it doesn’t require any configuration, but lacks advanced features and is best for small and uncomplicated networks. Asmart or web-managed switch allows configuration of the switch ports--supporting popular advanced features such as VLAN, bandwidth control, 802.1X authentication, and SNMP--and is suitable for most small to midsize businesses.
If you need more Wi-Fi coverage than a wireless router can give, or if you choose an ethernet-only router/gateway/firewall, you can add wireless access points to your network. Access points are, in essence, wireless routers that lack the routing capability. You connect an access point by running ethernet cabling from its single ethernet port to a port on your router/gateway/firewall or switch. The most basic access points broadcast a single SSID (network name), whereas most business-class access points support VLANs and allow you to broadcast multiple SSIDs.

Standards and Features for Wi-Fi

When shopping for a wireless router or access points, note that the different wireless standards each have varying maximum speeds. At the least, you’ll want to go with 802.11n (which some vendors call Wireless-N). If you have close neighbors, consider a dual-band router or access point that also works in the 5GHz frequency band, which provides more channels and is less congested than the common 2.4GHz band.
Starting in late 2012, keep your eyes open for routers and access points supporting the newer 802.11ac standard, which will offer even higher speeds. However, the earliest 802.11ac products likely will be based on the draft specification, and may not be upgradable to the full, completely finalized standard.
Remember, your Wi-Fi-equipped computers and devices will achieve the highest possible speeds with newer 802.11n and 802.11ac routers or access points only when they too support the same standard. All of the wireless standards are backward-compatible with one another; but computers or devices using an older wireless standard won’t perform as well, and they can even negatively affect the performance of your entire wireless network.
VPN and routers
If you have laptops, netbooks, or desktops that support a wireless standard that's older than that of your wireless router or access points, you can upgrade them with a PCI card, PCIe card, PCMCIA card, or USB wireless adapter. Wi-Fi smartphones and tablets, however, aren’t usually upgradable.

Ethernet Considerations

When buying any networking gear that has ethernet ports, consider the following related features and specs.
Ethernet speed: For routers, gateways, firewalls, and switches, focus on those models that support gigabit ethernet (1000 mbps) for higher speeds on your hard-wired computers. Keep in mind the speed that each of your computers supports, which you can upgrade with a PCI or PCIe ethernet card.
Switching capacity: If you do require a network switch, assess competing models' switching capacity to compare the total maximum simultaneous bandwidth supported.
Dual or backup WAN: If Internet access is crucial to your operations, consider routers, gateways, or firewalls that have a second WAN port or that support a 3G/4G card for failover or load balancing in case your main Internet connection goes down.
PoE support: If you plan on running wireless access points throughout, consider routers, gateways, firewalls, switches, and access points that support Power over Ethernet so that the power can run through the ethernet cabling with the data. This feature can save time and money, in contrast to the effort it might take for you to place access points near electrical outlets or to run new electrical lines.
DMZ port: If you have a server or another device that needs direct access to the Internet, consider a router, gateway, or firewall that has a dedicated DMZ port. Remember, though, that most models allow you to assign certain computers to the DMZ via the settings, without a dedicated port.

VPN Server for Secure Remote Connections

A router, gateway, or firewall with a VPN server supports remote connections so that users out of the office can securely access the network, or so that multiple offices can link together in a site-to-site arrangement. A few different VPN types are available.

PPTP: Nearly all operating systems and mobile devices support Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol with a built-in VPN client, but it doesn’t have the best security. Connectivity issues can arise when users remotely connect from networks that don’t allow VPN pass-through.
L2TP/IPsec: Also widely supported among operating systems and popular mobile devices, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol has better security than PPTP. However, it's usually more complicated to configure, and it too can produce connectivity issues when users remotely connect from networks that don’t allow VPN pass-through.
SSL: The Secure Sockets Layer protocol allows remote users to connect via a Web browser--eliminating the VPN pass-through issue--and doesn’t require full client software. You can install a small plug-in via the browser to facilitate tunneling of a user’s Web browsing and email traffic. Additionally, some SSL VPN methods offer a Web portal in which users can access applications and email without any VPN client; such a setup would be convenient when they need to connect from home or on another noncorporate computer rather than on a work laptop.via[pcworld]
OpenVPN: This protocol is usually included only on routers preloaded with the open-source DD-WRT firmware, and most built-in clients on computers or mobile devices don't support it. As a result, you’ll have to install third-party VPN client software on the computers or devices for remote user connections. But OpenVPN offers greater security and more reliable connectionsfrom networks that don’t allow VPN pass-through.

How To Bypass SmartScreen Filter (Windows Protected Your PC) In Windows 8


SmartScreen Filter is a security module that is integrated into several Microsoft products such as Internet Explorer or Windows Live Messenger. It basically warns users if they are about to open a potentially dangerous website or file. A warning is displayed and it is up to the user to continue or stop at this point. The filter has been criticized in the past for being too obtrusive and annoying, criticism that it shares with the User Acount Control feature.
A new version of SmartScreen Filter has been integrated into the Windows 8 Developer Preview. It is not clear yet if the feature will make it into the final version of Windows 8 in this form, or at all, but it is likely that it does. Whenever you execute a file that you have downloaded from the Internet, it is first checked by SmartScreen Filter against a database. Files that cannot be identified are blocked automatically, and a warning is displayed instead.
Windows protected your PC
Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized program from starting. Running this program might put your PC at risk.
The only two options on the screen are the highlighted OK button, and a more info link that is nearly as distinguishable from the background. A click on OK closes the message and blocks the executable from being started. If you want to start the program, you need to click on More Info. This changes the Windows protected your PC screen slightly.
Microsoft displays publisher and program information, and a run anyway button. The program will be executed on your system if you click on that button.
This feature has the potential to cost you some time and a lot of nerves. If you are running an up to date antivirus software, you probably have no need for SmartScreen Filter’s additional protection.
Disabling SmartScreen Filter In Windows 8
You can disable SmartScreen Filter in the Windows Control Panel. Use Windows-Pause to bring it up, and click on Control Panel in the address bar afterwards. Select System and Security and then Action Center afterwards.
Select Change SmartScreen Settings on the left. This opens the following menu where you can turn Windows SmartScreen off.




The following options are available:
  • Require approval from an administrator before running unrecognized programs from the Internet (recommended)
  • Give a warning before running unrecognized programs from the Internet, but don’t require administrator approval
  • Turn off Windows SmartScreen
Windows SmartScreen could be Windows 8′s User Account Control. A feature that aims to make the system more secure and annoys the hell out of users at the same time. (thanks Caschy for the tip)

Chrome 17 released: More speed, safer downloading


Google released a new version of Chrome today to the Stable channel. Chrome 17 [release notes]is an evolution bringing a couple nice enhancements, including new Extensions APIs, updated Omnibox pre-rendering, download scanning protection and some minor under-the-hood tweaks. Chrome’s download manager now checks executable files upon downloading by pinging Google’s servers for information on the originating site, which results in safer downloading. Omnibox, the browser’s address bar that doubles as the search box, has also been tweaked.
“When you start typing in the Omnibox and the URL autocompletes to a site you’re very likely to visit, Chrome will prerender the page, so it will appear faster–sometimes, even instantly–as soon as you hit Enter,” wrote Google in a blog post (this feature appeared in Chrome betas a month ago).
Google will also get Chromebook users up to the speed with frequent Chrome OS updates. The next Chrome OS update will bring an improved Verizon 3G activation portal and a brand new image editor, allowing Chromebook users to view, edit, and share photos on the web right out of the box. The search giant issued the first public beta yesterday ofChrome for Android 4.0 devices. Immediately Skip YouTube Video Ads Without Waiting


Youtube has come up with a variety of Video Advertisements which are being shown at the beginning of almost all of the featured videos every time you start watching them. This is very irritating and waste of time in certain situations.
Well, skipping Video ads on Youtube is now possible with this Google Chrome’s extension calledSkip ads on youtube – No illegal block. Just install it and skip video ads while watching Youtube Movies or any Video without any interruption.
See the screenshot, this ad can only be skipped after some amount of time, till then you have to watch it and waste your time unless the ad is in your interest! Well, notice the Blue play icon just like Windows media player. After you have successfully installed this extension, this icon will be shown up whenever you start watching videos in Youtube.
Now you just have to click the icon and it will turn into a “Thumps up” icon and hence the ad is skipped. Although the text ads by Google Ads are not skipped but it’s less interrupting than these ads.
It would really help me to skip long Video ad on Youtube before playing movies on Youtube Boxoffice. As you are still having these text ads on your videos, you can close them right away. This extension skips only video ads. 
Skip Ads on Youtube – No illegal block is a must have extension in your Chrome browser. It hardly makes your Youtube experience slower, rather than increasing it with less interruption. For every time, you will have to click the icon to skip the video ads. I suppose that is also kind of irritating so for automatically skipping through video ads, there is a paid version available for this extension here worth for only 4$. It skips the video ads automatically, so you don’t have to keep in mind to click the button to skip video ads every time.
If you are an avid Youtube user, this extension is very much useful for you. Specially it’s paid version, which handles automatically skipping through ads and gives you the uninterrupted Youtube experience. Additionally, you can also enhance Youtube Music Playback Experience. Have fun!

5 Free Operating Systems that aren't LINUX


The war of operating systems started decades ago, and the first mainstream desktop OS war took place between the Macintosh and Windows operating system. Operating systems are the first bit of software that go into our computer. As PCs dominated the market, Windows became the most used and most popular operating systems ever. It’s stayed that way for close to two decades. 

Linux, a free and open source operating system was another one to join the race, but years later, it still hasn’t managed to capture the desktop PC market. Efforts on the Linux are scattered. There are hundreds of Linux distributions, some of them designed specifically for the end user, while the many others made for specific tasks. There are minor differences between Linux distributions, so the user experience doesn’t change a whole lot between them. If you’ve tried your hand at Linux and want to try some others, we’re giving you a list of operating systems that aren’t Linux. 

Before you actually go and install them, be careful and try and back-up up all the important data from your hard drive. Some of these operating systems are in their development stages and may not have been tested thoroughly. 

ReactOS (www.reactos.com)
While Linux and all of its variants have a completely new look, one of the biggest problems faced by new users is adapting to the new user interface after having used Windows for a long time. ReactOS is a free operating system that looks a lot like Windows. The unique thing about ReactOS is that it was built from scratch, to be like Windows. ReactOS can, in fact run many Windows applications and it’s free. The developers want users to be able to use ReactOS, along with the Windows software and compatible hardware without any issues. At just 48.9 MB, the latest version of ReactOS - 0.3.13 isn’t too large or heavy on resources - it’s a fraction of the size of a standard Windows operating system installation, but remember, is very limited in features. Those who don’t want to setup space on their hard drives and install ReactOS on it, there’s also LiveCD versions that can run off a CD or even disc images that will work on a virtual PC environment (such as Virtualbox).

Haiku Project (www.haiku-os.org)
BeOS was an operating system that was first developed back in 1991 and the last version 5.1 came out in late November 2001, after which the operating system ceased to exist. Haiku a community driven project, is influenced by the original BeOS operating system and has been under development, since the end of BeOS. The Haiku project aims to have the operating system to be compatible with BeOS binaries. BeOS, in its time was extremely responsive and had the right number of features and a very modern user interface. Haiku mimics most of the features and characteristics of that OS. Like ReactOS, Haiku is also available free for download as an ISO that you can burn on a disc and install on your PC. A virtual machine image file is also available. It’s a little bulkier than ReactOS, at close to 238 MB, but still much smaller than most mainstream Linux distributions and also, Windows.

Google’s Chrome OS was designed for notebooks and specific models called Chromebooks. The platform, itself is very lightweight and is designed for use on the web. The operating system is minimal and it runs a customized version of the Chrome browser, which in turn accesses Google’s suite of web applications. While there isn’t a very clear build available by Google for download, there are developers who have compiled the operating system and made those available on the web. Chromium OS is actually the development branch of the operating system that’s continuously under development. A while back, we published an article on how to install Chromium OS on your notebook. Hexxeh is one of those developers and you can find a recent built of the Chromium operating system available for download on his site. 

OpenIndiana (www.openindiana.org)
OpenSolaris, the popular open source, Solaris-based operating system was developed and handled by Sun Microsystems. Soon after Oracle took over Sun, development of the platform seemed to slow down and developers decided to branch out the operating system into something called OpenIndiana. While OpenSolaris, like OpenIndiana has its roots similar to Unix and Linux, many of the applications and packages have changed, since then. There are more advanced file systems available, along with a bunch of other features, which have made the operating system robust. If you’re a Linux user and you’re looking for something similar, OpenIndiana may be the one to try. The OpenIndiana desktop DVD build for 32-bit operating systems weighs no more than 802 MB and 963 MB for a more portable, USB version. 

FreeBSD (www.freebsd.org)
The original BSD operating system was developed by the Berkeley University in California. Like OpenIndiana, it started back as Unix and since then, there have been several branches of the operating system. NetBSD (www.netbsd.org) and PCBSD (www.pcbsd.org) are two such branches, but the most popular one seems to be FreeBSD. For the biggest of Linux fans, it’s BSD that they look at once they’re done playing with. FreeBSD is more suited towards server and development environments, still enthusiasts continue to run a server at home running FreeBSD.Via[tech2]
